Science is the study of the world around us and is divided into a myriad of subdisciplines to allow a scientist to specialize in a specific set of knowledge. Science is characterized by its ability to be proven time and again through testable experiments and helps humans to explain the known universe. Some of the most commonly known disciplines include biology, chemisty, physics, geology and oceanography (earth sciences) and astronomy. In recent years science has been attributed to the pursuit of knowledge and not the actual knowledge its self.

New research from biologists might suggests that dietary supplements containing macular carotenoids could help improve vision. Luteins are a form a carotenoids, a pigment found in vegetables, which helps shield the eyes from blue light radiated from the sun and can act as a “sunscreen” to help prevent damage to the retinas cause by long term exposure.

The Orion spacecraft completed it’s preliminary flight test called Exploration Flight Test (EFT-1) and may soon be transporting humans and supplies to the International Space Station. Hopes are that one day the Orion spacecraft may take humans to planetary bodies such as the Moon, asteroids or even Mars given the further research and development of long range space travel.

Chemists have discovered a new method of using ceramic coating on glass to allow water molecules to attract together, instead of repelling, to form a transparent layer of water instead of beading on glass. Other discoveries of nanoparticle coating can allow surface materials to regenerate themselves, fixing damage similar to biological self healing properties.

Meadow grass in Finland that live in isolated patches have a higher chance to transmit fungal pathogens than meadows that reside closer to others. Anna-Liisa Laine and fellow biologists studying plant ecology throughout the archipelago of Finland found that genetic diversity associated with meadows that reside closer to others develop higher immune systems.

Dibaryons, a six pack of quarks, was once thought to be a hypothetical particle in quantum mechanics but evidence has been discovered by physicists and engineers that two baryon particles can in fact bond. These quantum particles were first observed in 2011 however physicists had a difficult time replicating the results of the initial experiment to prove their existence to the scientific community.

Science is responsible for most of the technological developments that have been implemented by humanity in our day to day lives. Many things which are often taken for granted such as our cell phones, automobiles, fuel and electricity were all devised and refined through scientific experiments. Scientific knowledge is typically classified in two manners, as a theory or law (proven to through repeated experiments to produce the same result).
