Physics is the science of energy and matter which seeks to describe motion through time and space and how forces are applied on the matter we know. Originally this discipline was more philosophical with elements of mathematics and chemistry however after the Scientific Revolution this became an essential part of natural sciences. Some of the areas of specialty in physics include quantum physics, quantum mechanics, biophysics, particle physics and theoretical physics. Central elements of this science include thermodynamics, gravity, mechanics, nuclear fission, relativity, optics, nanotechnology and atomic theory.

Dibaryons, a six pack of quarks, was once thought to be a hypothetical particle in quantum mechanics but evidence has been discovered by physicists and engineers that two baryon particles can in fact bond. These quantum particles were first observed in 2011 however physicists had a difficult time replicating the results of the initial experiment to prove their existence to the scientific community.

Physics research into cloaking and invisibility may prove to be a significant asset to military defensive strategies in the next decade. Scientists have discovered a new method to cloak an object from electromagnetic frequencies which can create a state of invisibility to some wavelengths. Using metamaterials, it is now possible to hide objects from certain electromagnetic frequencies.

Quantum computing technology is the latest trend in science to develop models, calculate equations and determine long term trends for phenomenon which are out of the scope of a human’s lifespan. With the integration of new materials such as CuPc advancements in the quality of quantum computers may increase in the coming years.

Particle physicists have confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson particle using tests conducted with the CERN particle accelerator in Switzerland using the Large Hadron Collider. This particle has been speculated about in theoretical physics by the scientific community as having a great influence on the properties of matter.

Physicists using nanotechnology have found a way to increase the concentration of light particles on p-n junction solar cells using nanowires to increase the efficiency of energy absorbed in solar power cells. Increased efficiency in solar energy production could lead to more cost effective world wide use of renewable energy sources.

Modern physics is part theory and part application with a greater emphasis in theoretical models to describe how our universe works while flirting with science fiction in an effort to explore what is possible within the imagination. With recent technological advancements such as the CERN particle accelerator physicists are now able to utilize technology to verify theories such as that with the Higgs boson particle. Physicists are currently looking forward towards space exploration, propulsion, bioengineering and even how to stave off death and prolong human life.
