Science is the study of the world around us and is divided into a myriad of subdisciplines to allow a scientist to specialize in a specific set of knowledge. Science is characterized by its ability to be proven time and again through testable experiments and helps humans to explain the known universe. Some of the most commonly known disciplines include biology, chemisty, physics, geology and oceanography (earth sciences) and astronomy. In recent years science has been attributed to the pursuit of knowledge and not the actual knowledge its self.

Particle physicists have confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson particle using tests conducted with the CERN particle accelerator in Switzerland using the Large Hadron Collider. This particle has been speculated about in theoretical physics by the scientific community as having a great influence on the properties of matter.

Biologists have recently discovered that the health benefits of honey are essential for a bee’s immune system acting as a trigger to turn on their detoxifying genes. This natural pharmaceutical was once omitted from the diet of commercial honey bees however entomologists now believe their artificial diet should be reconsidered.

Biologists are investigating river and stream ecosystems by using one of nature’s ecological indicators: clams! Clams are filter feeders and can be used to find trace evidence for pollutants that enter our waterways by taking samples of their shells to determine where and what pollutants could endanger their ecosystem.

Chemists and biologists believe they have discovered the process of protein creation that triggers diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons and dementia. This discovery could lead to earlier diagnosis in patients and potentially into ways to suppress or treat these disease before they damage neurons and inflict permanent damage in the brain.

Physicists using nanotechnology have found a way to increase the concentration of light particles on p-n junction solar cells using nanowires to increase the efficiency of energy absorbed in solar power cells. Increased efficiency in solar energy production could lead to more cost effective world wide use of renewable energy sources.

Science is responsible for most of the technological developments that have been implemented by humanity in our day to day lives. Many things which are often taken for granted such as our cell phones, automobiles, fuel and electricity were all devised and refined through scientific experiments. Scientific knowledge is typically classified in two manners, as a theory or law (proven to through repeated experiments to produce the same result).
